Antique early 20th century ceramic Heart shaped tray or hanging plate. Beautifully hand painted with violets, and signed by the artist. This is an example of ladies' china painting, a quaint past-time of affluent women in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Signed by the china painter "M. H. R."
Measures 8" x 8" x 1 inch
The foot rim is pierced to permit hanging - can you see it on a gallery wall hung by a ribbon and bowknot?
There is some wear visible to the hand-painted gilding.
China painting was a thing after the American Civil War and into the 20th century. A china-decorating fervor swept the United States that persisted into the twentieth century. Thousands of women decorated ceramic objects for their homes, as gifts, and for sale. This heart-shaped dish is a reminder of that earlier time when ladies of leisure invested time and money into this creative hobby.
